A perfect film
The rules of the dogfight are simple:
1) Free cocktails
2) Free beer
3) They gotta be polite
Those are the rules. They gotta be polite.
It’s November 21st 1963, San Francisco. The day before President Kennedy is assassinated, and one night before the marines are shipped out to Vietnam. Their last night stateside, a group of friends: Berzin, Benjamin, Bill and Birdlace (the 4 bees) organize their ritual contest, the dogfight. A cruel game where they each throw in some money, rent out a bar, and compete to bring the most unattractive girl they can find. The prize? $100 for the man with the ugliest ‘dog’.
Lili Taylor and River Phoenix (his finest role) star as Rose Fenny, an impressionable, idealistic waitress and Eddie Birdlace, a hard-boiled, de-sensitized marine in one of the most honest and touching glimpses into first love ever seen on screen. It's a must-see for any Phoenix and Taylor fans, and a true hidden gem of independent cinema.
