Far from State of the Art, but a good storage box
This is an older design; it does not have the ability to run programs as so many new ones do. But if what you're looking for is dependable, affordable storage, this works perfectly.
Setup is what you'd expect from a NAS; decide how you want the drives set up - RAID 1-5, or JBOD - and let them work at setting it up. In my case, with RAID 5 on 4x2TB drives - it took almost 2 days to get everything sync'd and ready, so don't panic if it's still working on it for many hours.
I don't know about the new Buffalo NAS', but as I mentioned, this is an older design. The actual OS is distributed among the drives, so you can't just pull out one set of drives and stick in a new set - that will result in a "brain dead" box. Mine came with a fully loaded set of 250GB drives; to upgrade to newer (larger capacity) drives is a time consuming prospect - there are a couple of excellent write-ups on the interwebs, but the Cliff notes version is, after backing up all the data, "break" the RAID to just JBODs (just a bunch of disks), then replace them ONE AT A TIME, letting the NAS initialize each new drive before going onto the next. After all are initialized, you can them set up the array as RAID whatever.
I've had a couple of older (yes, older than this) for the last decade; they ran well until a lightning strike stopped that. I expect this one to run forever, but I expect everything - including me - to run forever. We'll see how that works out.
The only feature I miss on this unit is the ability to "sleep" the hard drives. I believe my older units could power down when not accessed for some period; this one keeps everything spinning at 7200RPM, and fans blowing the warm air around. So it's probably not the most economical unit to leave running; again, newer unit can both "sleep" and follow a schedule to shut down at certain times, eg, middle of the night. This one doesn't have that option.
Buffalo support is a little sketchy for these older units; tech support is quick to tell you that this is an older unit, and you might consider buying a newer one (Buffalo, of course). This particular unit was supplied with 4x250GB drives, obviously well used but fully functional, for under $100. For a RAID5 Ethernet NAS, you really can't do much better. IMO, of course...
