Uniquely engaging if violent tale.
Missed this in the theaters but I've now heard Seth Meyers tell each of the stars that it's one of his favorites. I can see why.
Farrell is a hapless novice hit man, at grips with something terrible he's done, Brendan Gleeson the more experienced friend who brought him into the trade. They've arrived in story-book-sleepy Bruges, Belgium, awaiting orders from their boss, Ralph Fiennes, back in London.
Gleeson, relaxed and feeling he's on a brief holiday, wants to enjoy Bruges. Farrell, on edge and tormented, can't imagine such a thing - until he meets a pretty, friendly girl.
There is a back and forth in mood between light realism, farce, comedy, violent eruption. But this story of "honor among murderers" unfolds skillfully and with dark, dark irony.
