Shakesprian Noir
Synopsis: Highly regarded theatre actor Anthony John’s violent temper leads his actress wife, Brita, to leave him. When the two perform together in a production of “Othello,” the strain of playing Othello drives John insane. Hollywood great Ronald Colman finally won an academy award for best actor (the only actor to do so for a noir film) gives an intellegent, commanding performance as Anthony John, the clue to the characters duality is in the characters name made of two christian names, the storyline has strong echos of Jekyll & Hyde. Shelley Winters in her first major role is very impressive. Dated, yes, and some of the histrionics are heavy handed but nevertheless worth seeing.
