Prototyping quality
I saw illustrations of game socket adapters with this style of header, you can stack, re-route and even add discrete components, I got the multicolor ribbon which makes it easier to match pins. The alternative is the mass production style press in connector or a ready assembled cable. These ones are better for learning circuits and fun for fabbing and modding.

Makes desktop software usable on older PowerBooks
2 of 2 found this helpful I put off getting one of these until the backlight on my laptop failed. There are certain applications that run better on the early Macintosh although they probably weren't intended for the smaller screens of a PowerBook from those days. You'll also need an Apple to VGA adapter to use with a modern LCD. Once it's set up you may have to adjust or change some control panels (I had a problem with a Kensington trackball that needed Kensington's driver and control panel rather than the generic Apple ones). This adapter allows you to have a very compact system without the restriction of the small original display.

Cyclopedic indeed
I got several of the titles in this series and attempts at skimming them for easily digestible homeschooling material have been hampered so far by the fantastic quality of the scans. I had better luck with a new netbook and Adobe Reader DC than a 2.5GHz Core duo Macbook and Reader 8. The first volume covers Surveying and Technical drawing (all I browsed yet). The surveying works as infotainment for a 12 yo boy and definitely justifies upgrading his laptop.
