Gibbons: YES, Foster: NO Abuse victims: Be Careful!
Ellen Foster is an intimate look into the mind and life of a young girl whose mother has died and father is an alcoholic, absent most of the time. Her coping mechanisms are clever and her world view is mostly not in touch with the reality of her time.
Kaye Gibbons is a gifted writer and that is what makes the story worth the read for a fan. Had this been the first Gibbons book for me it would have been my last, however, because I have not found that children naturally respond to Ellen's lifestyle with the resiliency that she possesses. This interrupted my ability to totally relax my mind while reading. I suppose a child like Ellen Foster could possibly have existed. Her charm is contagious and her undying hope is inspiring, but her ability to get herself into a foster home AND be emotionally level is the departure from rationality that can lead to dangerous thinking like, maybe child abuse is okay for some children. I am not surprised that this was praised on the Oprah reading list. I have not found much merit in her selections because the couple I started to read appeared to wallow in altered reality and victimization. For the discriminating reader, I am proud to report that Oprah hasn't taken much interest in many of Gibbons' books.
For anyone who has lived similarly to Ellen Foster this book might be one to pass by if you are trying to heal realistically. For those of us who have not lived like Ellen, the other personalities in Gibbons' books are very believeable and worth your time to get acquainted with.

Best all-around wee pads.
I love everything about these Kirkland extra large absorbent pads. We have a 5, and a 12 pound dog. They are indoor/outdoor trained. A box of 100 pads lasts 3 months for them, like clockwork, so I buy 2-4 boxes at a time normally. The boxes are also a great size for reusing.
