Absolutely some of the best strings I've ever heard. More usable than some samples of actual orchestras.

Another Home Run For "Stunt Guitarist"
Steve Vai has always been an instrumental genius, as that's certainly obvious as you watch Vai and his band of prodigies navigate the next-to-impossible tunes and arrangements in this concert. But two things stand out as new developments: the sound of this particular ensemble, with two violinists and younger, fresher musicians than past outings, and the SONGS.
Vai has put together a number of full-on, commercially viable songs - with lyrics and everything! Where his vocals have been quirky and novel in the past, he has obviously gone for voice lessons, and boy did they work. He's singing great. What a wonderful addition to the palette. I hope his next dvd will feature more of this side of Vai.
Regarding his band, they're all the virtuosi one would expect to share Vai's stage, but special note must be made of the magnificent Alex Depue, violinist extraordinaire and keyboardist. I'm reminded of an early Yngwie Malmsteen album I had as a young and developing musician; I'd just gotten my head around the massive talent of the guitarist when he suddenly started dueling with a keyboard player who was giving him quite a run for his money (I believe it was Jens Johansson). This is what Vai has found in the brilliant Depue: a run for his money, and more. Vai has said in interviews that when he heard Alex Depue play for him in Depue's first audition, he literally fell to his knees and thanked God. Having been a Depue fan for the last decade, I understand such a response.
Though the show is impeccably rehearsed and executed, it still feels very informal and loose, in the good way; it's a party, plain and simple, with a really bad-ass band. Everyone involved obviously had a blast -- I dare anyone who watches this dvd NOT to. Highly recommended.

One of the best sounding electric piano units ever made, hands down.
