A Great read about the Home Guard
I bought this book as I was looking to find out more about the British Home Guard in WWII, but discovered that it's actually a reprint of a manual for the New Zealand Home Guard instead. I didn't know that there was a New Zealand Home Guard during the war before reading this book. In actual fact, this handbook was one of many adopted by the british home guard. whether it was issued is not clear. Before reading this book, I was of the opinion, like many people, that 'Dads Army' propaganda tool to raise morale than an effective fighting force. The level of training outlined in the book, dispels this and and suggests that the home guard would have been able to put up stiff opposition to an invasion. The book is worth reading just to appreciate how hard these unpaid volunteer soldiers trained. A lot of the information here is hard to find elsewhere in one place. This book is very convenient in that it contains in a small package everything a member of the Home Guard was supposed to know. Included in the book are things like: traffic control, destroying railways, using and maintaining his weapons and making improvised grenades. Much of this would apply to the regular army as well. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.
Polaroid Originals White 600 & SX-70 Box Camera Bag

Stylish Polaroid - Why be Black?
I love this bag. Taking Polaroids is still a bit quirky and frequently gets people talking 'I used to have one of those ' and ' do the still make film for them?'. So why have a black bag like everyone else? Practically, it will safely hold a virtually any of the 600 or Spectra cameras and a couple of films. I have not tried any of the others. It has a lovely blue fleece lining and the outer is actually an off-white soft vinyl, which will wipe clean if needed. The strap is secure and long enough. I feel the magnetic catch is a little weak, but it only needs the hold the flap down. The camera area is secured by a drawstring.

A very good re-imagining of the original TV series
When I heard about an Avengers movie I assumed it would be another Hollywood formula movie remake and it would resemble some of the recent Bond films more than the original TV series. How wrong could I be. Warner Brothers took a big chance with this, and it truly deserves to have done better than it has. I was thrilled to find the film had the same wonderful sense of absurdity as the show. This its real problem, the majority of the audience will not be familiar with the TV series ( and apparently nor where most of the critics). This being the case it's not surprising people think the film is bad. The comedy is a particular style of very English humour, the appreciation of the absurd. If you have no appreciation for absurdity, then you will NOT like this film. The Avengers purposely doesn't explain things, it's not supposed to make sense, that would ruin it. It's the little things in The Avengers that make it shine. Two scenes stand out as perfect examples of this understanding: When Mrs Peel tries to escape by running endlessly down an Escher-like staircase, and when Steed and Mrs Peel walk on water in giant bubbles. Sean Connery's eccentric megalomaniac fits right in with the The Avenger's roster of enemies. Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman are different than the characters played by Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg in the TV series, but did enjoy both of their performances their interpretation of the characters is quite interesting. It is a re-imagining rather than a copy. Having Eddie Izzard cast and not talking was the point of him being there. Having somebody like Eddie Izzard in your film and not having him say anything is to my mind very funny. It's very hard to explain to people why a film like The Avengers is so entertaining. This film is gaining Cult status, and it deserves it. Watch it, talk about it - watch some of the original TV shows and you will see why it is really so good. Oh for a directors cut!
