The best phone on the market by miles!!!
So to begin with I want to say this is a colossal jump in technology from my Samsung galaxy S7 which I bought brand new way back when it came out. To see how far things have come in such a short time is amazing. Albeit with a hefty price tag!!!
You have to realise what you are buying and understand that it is a huge leap forward in terms of tech and innovation but also 2 steps back in terms of durability and reliability, after all it is a first generation product. Next you have to ask if this phone is for you?
Samsung have the likes of the Note 10 with S pen and S20 series with all its cameras which are equally amazing phones and Apple have the SE and 11 series which are well nothing really new and exciting.
I haven't been a fan since the 4S, Samsung just did it better in so many ways since then and still does. I do know as the wife and daughter are apple lovers and have owned most models up to now the last being the XS and I am still not impressed.
I have wanted this phone since seeing the keynote and when it was recalled after release I thought it might go the way of the Note 8 and never be released again, thank goodness Samsung sorted the kinks out, well enough to release the handset anyway.
I have watched many videos on YouTube about this phone and would urge anyone wanting to buy one to do the same, you will find a wealth of information about it both good and bad, check out the durability tests, there is one conducted by an Apple fan which has quite surprising results(check out EverythingApplePro).
So onto the phone itself, if you are into taking pictures or selfies then this has more than enough cameras for you to take a pic with, 6 in total, 1 on the front screen, 2 on the inside main screen and 3 on the back. Storage comes in the form of 512gb which is computer/laptop levels and it comes with 12gb of ram which is more than enough for multitasking.
It's a heavy phone but that's understandable considering what's packaged in to it, 2 batteries which allows you to wireless powershare and charge your earbuds(Apple fans what!) and other devices using upto 30% battery life, I charged my Moto 360 watch and earbuds and it does it easily (not at the same time), the battery lasts around 2 days with the way I use it and I am using it constantly for around 4 hours in the evening surfing the net and watching YouTube and during the day to do the same during my breaks and viewing various notifications and videos throughout the day.
It's a loud phone!!! I compared it to a Note 10+ of a friend and the mrs XS and this is way louder, it has 2 speakers built in and has a dolby Atmos feature as well. The earbuds give out great sound as well with the ability to tweak the equaliser in its own dedicated app. There is no headphone jack so its earbuds or you'd have to buy a pair with a usb C connection.
The screens, the front screen is small(Think iphone 4 size) but is more than usable, if only Samsung had made it the whole size of the front then it would have been ideal. The main screen is amazing, yes it's soft so be careful what you use on it, once again refer to durability tests(JerryRigEverything). Its attracts fingerprints like anything and you are not supposed to put a screen protector on it which I haven't so far, I just wipe them off with a screen wipe or glasses cloth.
The fold, you really do forget it's there!!! After using it for a while I totally forgot about it, its only when you view the screen from a certain angle that it is noticeable.
Apps, you can have 2 separate layouts for each screen, I have frequently used on the front screen and more organised apps in folders on the main screen. if you swipe up on the small screen you can access all of your apps if you wanted to or used the dedicated app icon on the inside to access them all too.
Multitasking is a joy on this, you can start doing something on the front screen and just open it up and continue on the main screen seamlessly, you can also have upto 3 different apps running at the same time on the main screen, I had a zoom meeting and the web browser running side by side with no issues on both 4g and wifi.
You have to ask yourself if this is right for you, for me it is, I don't like the size of phones now, I think they are getting too big but I do like having a tablet in my pocket. In its folded form I think it is a good size and is very usable and when I want to view more and do more then the main screen is utilised, using Ms Word & Excel are so easy to use on this.
Is it worth the money? I wouldn't and didn't pay £1900 for this but to pay around or less than £1200 brand new for this which I did is more than reasonable and also puts it into direct competition with the other big hitters:
