Tomie Collection
This DVD set is a must for those who into Japanese horror movies. It takes Japanese superstition to new level and incorporates romance in a "love with a lizard" kind of way. There are times where it can get tedious in it's story line, but this is in tradition with other Japanese horror films, as it relays the basis of the type of superstition.
The idea of a person being able regrow their lost limbs and/or body, has always been a fascination to some japanese. We are able to regrow lost tissue when we are injured, as lizards and such are able to regrow lost tails and limbs. The Japanese have speculated with this ability to new level, suggesting what a human might go through, if the damage to a human body was devastating enough. This is the basis of Tomie.
The Tomie Collection is a set of movies that deals with the concept of a cursed woman, Tomie, doomed to be reborn after being killed. She is never allowed to grow old, but when she dies, her body grows again from the head at accelerated rate. Each time, she is found by someone who feels pity on her, and takes care of her, all the while growing a love for Tomie, becoming a victim. As Tomie grows her body again, she becomes more abusive, and revenge becomes a overbearing urge for her. In her revenge, she develops a love for another person, usually a girl. The victim, seeing Tomie's affection for another, goes into a jealous rage, subsquently severing Tomie's head, and being killed themselves or arrested for murder. Thus, the cycle continues.
