It's only a game? Far from it...
I bought this when it first came out, but having lent my copy to a friend of a friend (never again!), it vanished into the ether, and so I picked up another copy. It was never in question that it needed to be replaced. All of Bank's books, whether with an 'M' or without, merit repeated reading. Over the nearly twenty years since this story first emerged, I must have read it half a dozen times or more, and remain constantly amazed at the depth of imagination, and the use of language. Banks is a consummate wordsmith, not in the Stephen Fry 'using a hundred words when three will do' but in his ability to change the tone and vocabulary of the piece in accordance with the character and scenario. Many try, few are as successful. The slow-burn build of suspense and tension throughout this novel, culminating in a final confrontation that is both a personal fight between two men and a conflict between two civilisations, is positively pant-wetting. The main protagonist is flawed, no lantern jawed hero of the spaceways, but a bored diletantte whose own craving for something more than he already has leads him down a path over which he can exercise only a little control. Glorious cameos throughout too. Buy now. And pick up 'Use of Weapons' while you're at it. Even now, his two best 'Culture' books...

Dreadful tosh for completists only
Don't get me wrong, the speed of service, price and packaging were all excellent. Hats off to the retailer. The comic itself sucked. A pointless spin off of a big old crossover storyline, added nothing either as a standalone tale or as part of a larger whole. No characterisation, no development. And the art! Fine for the first few pages, then the blindfolded 12 year old was given the job to finish it off. Awful.

Not cheap, still nasty...
For the price, and the picture used to illustrate, you'd expect something better than this. Very cheap, thin, and they'd somehow managed to cut it so it was lopsided, going to a point on one side, cropped short on the other so if worn, it would look really odd. Bought for stage work, but unusable, and an alternative found.
