Great Versatility...
Got this lens as part of a kit with my first nikon D-SLR (D80) about 18 months ago. It's been a superb all-rounder with a versatile zoom range and reasonably small size and weight. Given the zoom range it has surprisingly good image quality throughout esp. if stopped down one or two notches. Works really well on both my D80 and [acquired later] D200 bodies; copes well with flare and ghosts when shooting in to the light. It's not the most robust of lenses with some 'play' in the zoom mechanism; I think it's got slightly worse over the 18 months I've had it; but it has been very well used with about 10,000 frames captured with it in that time. Neither does it appear to affect image quality - and I have a stunning 900x600mm print on the lounge wall. Would I buy one now? Difficult question, with a couple of answers... 1 - Given I have a D80 & D200, then probably not - because I'd go for the 18-105DX VR instead! With a maximum aperture of f/5.6 I miss VR in low light. 2 - If I had a D300 or similar with better noise reduction at high ISO ratings then the lack of VR is less of an issue; and the extra 30mm zoom is always useful. Go on, get a used one off of eBay, you know you want one...

Good but outdated
I bought this camera to dip my toe in the water of capturing video of mountain bike riding. There are many more modern alternatives with higher definition and smaller, lighter construction but they are way more money! This one, is pretty good. The video quality if fine so long as you don't view it full screen on a high-res monitor as it is only VGA format. It records sound which I didn't expect so that's good too. It comes with several mounting options giving many choices (too many?) of where to mount the unit on the bike or helmet. Some great mount points for interesting footage can be found with a little imagination. The ability to rotate the camera on two axes relative to it's mount is a superb feature. Sadly, I find it a little too heavy for comfortable use when mounted on my bike helmet, and it has to be central or it makes me feel off balance. Also, there is a small amount of movement between camera and mounting bracket so there is too much jerkiness in the video - this can be fixed by sliding a thin piece of plastic between camera and mount but it's tedious. The handlebar mount is great. No movement between camera and mount and I found it very easy to get a good and firm fitting. Obviously the quality of image is dependant on the roughness of terrain and the quality of the front suspension - it is fine on my Fox TALAS forks. The unit is waterproof and survived a couple of hours in heavy rain - unsurprisingly the lens does get splashed depending on mount position, and being recessed can be tricky to wipe dry. Would I buy another? Probably not. I'd get a more modern unit which is smaller and lighter. Having said hat, this is great value and an ideal starter unit.

A litte cracker...
A straightforward no nonsense GPS for outdoor activities such as hill walking or mountain biking. It's rugged enough to withstand rough handling and heavy rain attached to the handlebars of a bike (optional bracket needed). Couple with some mapping software and connected to your PC you can upload routes and download the tracks easily. You will however need the optional cable. It doesn't support mapping, but to be honest I have never needed it, the Geko gives clear turn indications and a paper map is always essential anyway - even though the batteries do last a while. What do I like - pretty much everything, it's ideal for me. Light weight and easy to use. What do I dislike - nothing, I even got used to the bright colour! Oh yes, it doesn't float! Why did I buy it - to ease navigation on mountain bike rides, and should I get lost, give me the grid reference of where I am, and where North is.
