A Delight and a Disappointment
As an amateur magician in my childhood and a life-long theatre lover (active on both sides of the footlights) I was excited to discover that "The Magic Show" was available on DVD. I had never seen the show performed but had loved the score ever since I purchased the album shortly after the musical opened on Broadway. When the DVD arrived I eagerly popped it into my player and sat back ready to be thoroughly entertained - and I was. However, while watching the performance, there were a few moments when I was left a bit baffled by the score which contained songs I did not recall from the album (and I am aware that an original cast album does not always contain all of a show's musical performances). But this was not as big an issue for me as the song(s) that were NOT a part of this performance, in particular "Solid Silver Platform Shoes" (probably the one song I most eagerly anticipated seeing performed on stage). As the cast took it's bows and the credits rolled, I was left a bit baffled - where was 'my' song? I quickly hopped on my computer and googled the answer to my dilemma: Evidently this live performance was taped in Canada several years after the original Broadway run and for that reason, two of the original songs were replaced by the composer ("West End Avenue" because Canadian's could not relate to the NYC references and my beloved "Solid Silver Platform Shoes" because they [the shoes] were no longer in style). Despite my disappointment, I was thoroughly entertained by the production and the performances. I only wish that the product description had made note of these 'alterations' so I would have been prepared for what I was going to see. I'm sure that I would have (almost as) eagerly purchased the DVD knowing the changes and with this 'warning' now in print, suggest that others do the same. My only secret wish is that the two replaced songs might have been performed and offered as 'bonus' material on the DVD.

A SORRY SOUND OF MUSIC - LIVE
Back in the summers of 1964 and 1965 I appeared in summer stock productions of "The Sound of Music", cast in the role of Friedrich. Imagine my surprise and excitement to learn that there was going to be a live production of the original Broadway musical - and to be broadcast on my birthday! What a wonderful present!!! While there was much ado both before and after the performance about the choice of casting Carrie Underwood in the role of Maria, the problems with the production go much much deeper than that possible error in judgment. In fact, had several other errors been corrected - or not made in the first place - perhaps her performance might not have drawn such harsh criticism. Tale of Two Tarantinos (the good & the bad)
It was the best of films, it was the worst of films... So what's the big idea with having about half (or more) of a film (that's supposedly in English - that's the language I chose on the DVD) subtitled??? Did someone think that made the film 'art?' WRONG! It just made it annoying! Here was a film that I was ever so anxious to watch (and probably watch over and over) - great director (Tarantino), great star (Brad Pitt) and an interesting story line. Was the direction great? Yes! Was the star great? Yes! Was the story line/plot great? Yes! Did I enjoy the film? No - No - No! Would I watch it again? NO! Would I recommend it to anyone else? NO! When you have to read subtitles through most of the film (and in my case out loud for my friend who could not see them well enough to read them on his own) it's hard to relax and just enjoy the film - and I didn't! (It also didn't help that many of the subtitles went so fast I couldn't read the whole thing aloud AND some of them were in white against a pale yellow background making them virtually impossible to make out.) I think that sometimes directors get so tied up in their (so called) 'art' that they forget that their primary goal is to entertain (even if you want to teach a moral or promote an idea or view, you darn well better entertain me or I'll be turning the flick off before your message is delivered). If I wanted to read 'Inglorious Basterds' I'd have looked for it in print!
