Brilliant lucid and entertaining writer writing about a very important subject
I think Nick Lane's books are at the level of great classics such as Darwin's Dangerous Idea and The Blank Slate. He is a brilliant writer who writes about the most interesting subject within biology namely the origin of life. Its a really tough question because so many things seem to be required at once. But the difficulty is mirrored by the prize! If it could be shown how it happened all the religious mumbo jumbo that humans have had stuffed between their ears and should have been killed off by the Origin of Species will finally be thrown in the dustbin. (Incidentally in this regard I hate to be in agreement with Bill Gates but it appears Nick Lane's research is partly funded by Bill Gates so one has to grudgingly applaud him from desisting from buying yet more US farmland at least to a small extent to fund deeply interesting and significant fundamental scientific research and one wishes the Qataris stopped funding wars and did something similar.

Portable and reasonably priced source of energy
It is a very useful product and the price very reasonable because you don't have to pay any standing charges. It's portable so you can use it anywhere and although fairly heavy it's manageably carried by one person. About the only disadvantage I can think of is the fact that if the room it is used in is really cold (several degrees below freezing point ie below zero degrees centigrade) the butane can 'freeze' and the burner or other equipment will not work. For such temperatures propane (lower molecular weight and thus lower freezing point) should be used rather than butane.
