Mechanic's Companion Peter Nicholson Hardcover 2021
    22 May, 2022
A comprehensive manual on the historic trades and handicrafts.
This is a reprint of an 1845 American edition of an 1812 British compendium on the basic trades that create architecture: carpentry, joinery, turning (lathe work), bricklaying, stone masonry, plastering, painting, slating, and blacksmithing. This edition is printed on acid-free paper, sewn in signatures, and hard-bound in buckram--a volume made for frequent reference or as a bench-side companion for an artisan. Nicholson was a prolific writer and publisher of books on architecture and the building trades in the late 1700s and early 1800s, and his works were understandably reissued in many editions. This particular compendium is the perfect introduction to the building trades, authored by one of history's most productive writers on the subject. No better reference could be found by the present-day practitioner of historic preservation or the traditional building trades.
Stable and Barn Fixtures J W Fiske Iron Works Book NEW

The Best Source on Horse Stable Fixtures
This is an excellent source--probably the best in print anywhere today--on fixtures and appliances that were used in American horse stables at the turn of the twentieth century. While this subject may be esoteric, surviving horse stables, especially on large private estates, are a distinct and important architectural category. Stables reflect the ages-long human dependency on the muscular power and intelligence of the horse to further human endeavors and accomplish work that could be completed by no other means before the advent of the internal combustion engine or the electric motor. The study of the horse as a "living machine" is of current interest to many social and economic historians, and anything that sheds light on this phenomenon has scholarly value.
