Worth the price. Controversial but All the Better For That
The book is beautifully illustrated and contains interesting and informative text (about the artists rather than their prehistoric subjects). It is worth owning as a benchmark survey which summarises palaeoart in the late C20th/early C21st. That is to say, it is a benchmark of palaeoart produced by male artists, mainly hailing from North America, with a few token Europeans in the mix. It fully demonstrates both the strengths and deficiencies of this cultural background and will be a valuable future reference for comparisons if/when the demographic profile of palaeoartists diversifies to include those who are neither men nor Americans. Example: I find palaeoart which presents dinosaurs as always engaged in roaring, teeth-barring, vicious combat as neither scientifically valid nor aesthetically rewarding. It tells us more about the North American culture of the artists than dinosaurs. I was both intrigued and unsurprised to find several featured artists also worked for comic book publishers, Hollywood, and video games. Yup. Figures. But twas ever thus - British Victorian prehistoric life imagined by Owen was as much a representation of Victorian Blighty as of ancient life. Part of the fascination of palaeoart for me is seeing how the past is drawn as a version of the present and vice versa. This is one reason why I expect to enjoy this book even more twenty years from now - when its ability to encapsulate a feel for turn of the century culture will be all the more useful and stand as a contrast to whatever bias has hegemony in the 2040s. While not endorsing all the art or all the (now often dated) interpretations of the evidence, I can warmly recommend this as a fascinating and enjoyable survey of a good variety of often delightful artwork.

Fascinating Overview of Several Talent Artists & Their Palaeoart
This second volume of 'Dinosaur Art' continues the good work of the first - good production values, an attractive 'coffee table' format with some very attractive and memorable art. In addition, for the first time, it features work by a woman and by artists working outside the Americas. This provides a broader range of aesthetic and technical approaches to palaeoart, a wider range of subjects, and puts the first volume into context as a survey not of all palaeoart but of only a sub-culture in palaeoart. That is a good step in the right direction. I can only hope the third volume gives us more work from the non-Western world. A reconstruction of prehistoric life by artists working in Indian, Chinese, Australian indigenous traditions etc sounds like it can only enhance our knowledge and pleasure - both in itself and when compared with Western art. Meanwhile, volume II is worth owning in addition to volume I because it features sculpture and 3-d reconstructions as well as 2-d art in traditional and digital media. Seeing organisms in the round is absolutely necessary, for me anyway, in order to fully understand them and imagine them in life. Of course, the sculpture is only represent in the book by 2-d photography but it makes me eager to see the originals and to learn more about the artists and their other works. In fact, it makes me itch to try my hand at modelling prehistoric subjects myself even if only as a hobby or just for the fun and challenge of the project. Yes, I warmly recommend this book and its companion volume 'Dinosaur Art'. Adults will enjoy the text and images, children will be fascinated by the images and gradually assimilate the text as they mature. Should inspire quite a few new artists to try their hands at their own artwork!

Unsuitable For Housing ANY Animal
1 of 1 found this helpful This item is far too small, and has no filtration, to house any animal. It should not be used for this purpose. It would be animal abuse and illegal in my country (UK). It is a wall vase suitable for displaying flowers. It is distressing to think that anyone has bought this item and put any animal into it. Shameful!
