Another Excellent Sony Product
I purchased the HDR-HC7E to replace my ageing old faithful DCR as a backup camera whilst filming weddings, amateur shows etc. It is also small enough for me to take on holiday rather than lugging around a full size shoulder mount DSR. Although it is not a 3CCD camera the quality of the footage is superb. What I like about it (and needed) is it's conductability, with outputs for Mic,LANC,HDMI,Firewire and Component DV it gells in easily with my Lanc controlled tripod and my editing equipment.I like the mini dv tape format as should anything go wrong you have only lost max 60min of filming where as with a HDD camara you could have lost the lot(far easier to change a defective tape or remove a tape from a faulty machine and use it in another camera rather than trying to recover from a broken HDD). The camera works fine on premium tapes, no need to buy expensive HD tapes. The camara size and weight for me is perfect as I feel you can go too small with a camcorder, and the smaller the camcorder the more stability during filming problems are introduced. This camcorder mounted on my small stedicam produces excellent smooth moving shots, and being small it is not intrusive for those close in ones and can be used in tight spaces. However there are a few small minor points. Because the menu is accessed through the LCD touchscreen it can get dirty or possible scratched but this is easily corrected by buying a packet of stick on screen protectors. Sony have fitted one of their intellegent hot shoes that kind of makes you buy their product specific extras, but once again hot shoe foot adaptors are readily available so now I can run my standard hotshoe lights etc, also as the battery is charged on camera you will need an external charger to charge a second battery whilst the first is in use.The standard battery perfomance so far has been good with an acceptable duration. Overall the camera is easy to use with a good choice of funtions and features. It is a worthy replacement to the HDR-HC1E being more compact(how do Sony fit everything in?)and I would definately recommend it for those who want more than just point and shoot capability with excellent quality results. PS For the image concious it looks more like an older style camcorder as appossed to the pro look of the HC1E but looks are definitly not everything.
