churchill 's generals
A compendium of the most famous/senior generals and the less self-promoting but equally effective ones. It reveals the close cooperation between the Allies and the tensions which were resolved by the greatest generals within their own national forces and between disciplines.
Such a good introduction to the lesser known leaders is a stimulus to seek biographies of these other great men and the conflict between the forces of light and darkness.

Classic Timeless British Comedy
Probably more inventive and entertaining than Dad's Army, with equally engaging characters. Some of the pieces in the complete series rank in the highest ranks of farce, eg. the parade by a visiting RSM conducted on their knees after the RSM has been hypnotised to imagine Lofty is 6'8" and the Section would do credit to the Elite Guards at Buckingham Palace.
Perry and Croft created a singularly fine series which mercilessly pokes fun at the British in India in the closing days of the Raj. How they produced one unique episode after another I do not know. They were themselves one-off.
Michael Bates [who learnt to speak Hindi before he learnt English in India and was fluent in Urdu] is magnificent, Windsor Davies is brilliant and Don Estelle brings a touch of class to the proceedings. This is not to detract from the performance of the rest of the cast who contribute to the funniest series ever.

boring tedious prolix
This was an exercise in 'literary' self-indulgence
