Make your own New York City - compulsive fun from the early 2000s!
Played this ages ago for a bit, then got rid of it. So glad to have it back! It's a city simulation/business game, but it's quite different from, say, the SimCity series. Instead of zoning space for development, you place the individual buildings, whether they're residential, retail. commercial etc. You then have to upgrade each building to try and maximise its profitability. And you're not just placing buildings willy-nilly: you need to be responsive to what different types of people in your city want and need. The game also throws certain challenges at you to build and make profitable specific buildings, improve local parks etc.
Although this sounds laborious (especially as you've got the whole of Manhattan to fill!), it's really not - in fact, it's really rather compulsive. Trying to balance investment in new buildings with keeping your bank balance up; trying to establish yourself as a competitor to the existing tycoons of New York City, trying to meet the needs of the citizens of the city - it's really quite captivating and can definitely be one of those "minutes turn into hours"-style games.
The graphics aren't stunning, but hold up reasonably well for a game from the early 2000s. The sound's good and quite atmospheric - though I'd have liked it if there were a greater variety of sounds, especially citizens' voices, since they can get rather repetitive after a while. There are some cut scenes to introduce some of the challenges which are slightly cringe-worthy, but still fun.
Overall, a really good, different take on the city building simulation. The chance to shape your own version of NYC is too good an opportunity to turn down - go for it!

14 years and still going strong!
1 of 1 found this helpful I bought my first set of these 14 years ago. They’ve lasted through 3 different PCs and still sound as great as they did back then. I’m no audiophile, but to me they are wonderfully clear and lively sounding. I’ve never even thought about replacing them and am hoping they keep on going.
They’re so good, I’ve just ordered a second pair for my retro computing set up!
