An interesting account of Tolkien's World War I experiences.
An interesting account of Tolkien's World War I experiences and early influences. After watching the recent film, I was a bit disappointed that there was not more about his wife Edith in this book. Also, there was rather too much about how he invented his fictional language, which I frankly found tedious. The title is somewhat misleading, as it takes almost a third of the book before you get to the account of his joining the army but it is still a well written book that kept my interest.

A beautiful and moving film.
2 of 2 found this helpful A beautiful and moving film. Very well directed, with good period detail and atmosphere. The young actors, both the children and young adults playing Tolkien and his friends, are very good. Lily Collins is also excellent as Edith and manages to seem authentic as an Edwardian young woman (a rare gift these days, as most modern actresses mostly seem unable to step out of their own period). The film also gives a good idea of how Tolkien's horrific World War I experiences must have influenced his 'Lord of the Rings' books. An excellent film for Tolkien fans and also for anyone who is interested in how the experience of living in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, leading up to World War I, shaped the way people thought in the early Twentieth century.
