Awesome lens. Tack sharp wide open. Super creamy bokeh. AF a bit tricky.
1 of 1 found this helpful This lens is really fantastic. Super sharp even at f/1.4 wide open. Creamy bokeh with good color and contrast. Build quality is solid. It take "standard" 77mm filter. (Standard, because the almost all pro lenses like the 24-70 or 70-200 are using it too).
For portraits and low light work it is one of the best lenses.
But nothing is perfect:
- A screw in hood is needed (not so practical)
- It needs a (semi/pro) body with AF motor, which also means, since it is not an AF-S lens, you cannot override the focus during AF manually (like an AF-S lens)
- Focusing itself is tricky (at least on my D700). It is definitely not as fast and precise as my 24-70 f2.8 AF-S.
I guess the new 85mm 1.4 AF-S N wouldn't have these problems, but you pay almost twice as much, without getting much better images out of it.
