A Triumph by Marion Cotillard
Yes, after seeing this film I understand why she won the 2008 Best Actress BAFTA. The acting was superb throughout, especially when she was asked to recreate Piaf's high emotion and tantrums - you could believe that you were watching Piaf herself.
The only criticism I have is that the extent to which the film moved backwards and forwards in time from Piaf as a child to Piaf as an adult to Piaf on her deathbed, made the action rather difficult to follow. But then I expect that the French audience for whom this film was originally made would have known Piaf's life by heart anyway, and didn't need the details that I thought were missing in the film.
Overall an acting triumph by Cotillard and a truly moving experience.

Avoid!
