Not bad for an old camera
A very simple point and shoot camera. Focus and iris are automatic and do a good job. You are stuck with 2GB of memory and have an hour of record time before you have to offload your video. Shoots in .AVI format so check for compatibility with playback devices. Shoots in 640 x 480, also be aware of this. However it uses 2 AA batteries and uses them frugally. Your smartphone probably has better specs, however for those times when your phone battery dies...

    I like the simplicity
At first I was attracted to the Ipod shuffle for its design ethic. The clean minimal-ness of it all; just the basic transport and a USB port. Unlike the 2nd generation I like having the USB on the player itself - you don't need to carry any adapters around. Even though the unit seems simple, the unit comes alive when hooked into iTunes. I love the Auto Fill feature where you just click one button and let the laws of randomness fill your iPod. Of course you have full control of what you want to listen to. You can manuallly drag and drop your favorite songs into your player as you please. Personally I like having only 512MB of memory. With such basic controls, searching for a particular song can be laborious. However, you fill it with whatever you feel like listening to and go! 512MB holds plenty of music for the amount of time I plan on listening... Plus, its called a SHUFFLE for a reason, let it do what its good at - playing music back randomly. But, I've noticed when playing back, the player likes to organize things by song title. This could be an asset in finding a particular song for playback. I know some people complain that this Pod lacks a screen. Ah, but this is a hidden benefit. This allows you to actually LISTEN to your music! Plus, if you are working out or doing other activities, its one less thing to distract you. I really have a pet peeve about people whether on the train, walking in the street, or just out and about staring at little LCD screens - Especially Cellphones And lastly, the thing I really like is when listening to long selections (especially Podcasts) the player is able to hold its place. If you have to stop listening, just hit pause. Even if you have to shut it off, your selection will be right where you left it when you get back to listening. Also, speaking of pausing... If for some reason your headphones become disconnected while listening, the iPod automatically pauses! When you plug the headphones back in, you can hit play and resume where you left off. To me these are unique features worthy of a 'well done'! And lastly, the iPod Shuffle CAN act like a Flash Drive. This is kind of a weird little side feature. First of all, Ipods like to have ONE computer as its main host. When you start sticking your shuffle into other computers, iTunes generally wants to erase the contents and refill it with music from the new computer. When you set up your iPod to be a Flash Drive, you partition it into two parts. Now you have a (smaller capacity) music player and a (custom sized) flash drive. I am not sure what you would want to put on the Drive side (photos, text files, etc) but if you put Music files on this side, the iPod will NOT recognize them during playback... So, I like the simple, rugged, and quick element of the player. Yes, it is different than the other iPods, but it seems to cater to a different audience...

    Works better than I thought!
I received this player (brand new) as a gift and I wasn't sure that it would work with my computer. I have an older iMac running OS 9.2 and iTunes ver 2... Anyway I couldn't be more satisfied! The computer recognizes the player (as a disc drive). I am able to fire up iTunes; arrange my songs in the order I want on a playlist; and drag the selected list over to the Lyra's screen icon. It couldn't be any easier! Plus, the Lyra remembers the songs in the order I arranged! Also, I have found out that th Lyra works in practically any computer. I've installed the software on a Windows 98 machine and the system works rather beautifully. I've found out the Lyra works well on Mac OSX machines as well. I haven't tried it on newer Windows machines. I like the build of the player. This player seems a bit more rugged than say the iPod. Because of this, it could be a better choice for kids and workouts. Speaking of workout friendly, the rubber buttons are a nice touch. You can operate the buttons by 'feel' another asset for your workout. Plus, at the price-point (used, these guys are pretty cheap), if it gets lost, dropped, or stolen, you can easily replace it with another. And the fact that it uses a single AAA battery, you can get more power anywhere. If there is anything I don't like about the player, is the included EZ Clip earphones. I don't like the fit. and they are kind of cheap. Also, the included armband seems a little small. Could RCA be catering these players to a younger audieince? I just got a 512MB SD card for the player. Depending on your computer system, you may need to invest in a card reader to drag and drop files onto. I've found if you are still using a Mac with OS9, you will need a card reader. However, most other computers I have tried will recognize the Lyra and the card when pluged in via the USB cable. Due to the basic transport controls, I don't feel you need to go past 1GB of external memory. Imagine pressing the FWD / REV buttons 100 times to get to your favorite song! Also, when using larger SD cards, you will want to organize your music with folders. When the filemanes start looking alike, your computer's OS might not allow you to drag selections onto the card. But, when you organize things with folders, you can eliminate this. Also when preparing your MP3s for the player make sure your ID3 TAG is set to V2.3. The player's display takes advantage of the Artist and Title information. On a side note, I recently purchased another Lyra (used) for $20! Once again for the disposability factor. Now this one seems to act different. Maybe it has a different version of firmware or something - I don't know. This Lyra doesn't read the memory cards (which work fine in my other Lyra)! Also, when I turn on Lyra #2, the player gives a 'please wait' message and then arranges the files alphabetically (by file name). This could be frustrating if you would like to listen to your tracks in their intended order (by album). You can go in and edit the file names - this could be fairly tedious and may not be not be a permanent fix. But, for $20 I can't complain too much. I'll just put my favorites in there and shuffle! So, when buying one used, you may want to keep this in mind and ask the seller about this. The Lyra was my first entry into the world MP3 players. Lets just say the experience has been positive so far.
