Great music

Not his best work

Though the title story contains some useful info on the Culture, ship minds, etc., this collection has a glib, dashed-off quality, not at all like the compelling, immersive worlds created in Banks' best novels- for my money, "The Algebraist," "Look to Windward," and, slightly less satisfying, "Surface Detail" and "Matter." To put this in context, it's fair to note that I wasn't wild about "The Use of Weapons" or "Consider Phlebas," both of which are highly regarded, and that I actively disliked "Excession."
