A review of the Viking image-stabilised monocular
This is a monocular unlike most. Usually the largest useful magnification is six to eight times, beyond which the device cannot be held steady enough to be useful. When the image stabilising is turned off, this is also true of this device.
Turn on the stabilising, and all the tiny shakes go away. It will not compensate for larger movements, but it isn't really designed to do so. What it does mean is that small details such as written signs and small wildlife can be discerned much more easily than would normally be the case, and you don't have to find something to rest the monocular on to get a steady view.
The overall design is a good one. The focus is on the objective lens, and works very well indeed. Depth of field is reasonable, as is the low-light performance. The eyecup is a rotating one (rather than the cheaper fold-down rubber ones) and in the folded position gives enough eye relief that the monocular can be used whilst wearing spectacles, albeit only just. The device is small enough to fit in a coat pocket easily, and is also supplied with a neck strap which serves its purpose very well indeed. Whilst this monocular is a little heavier than non-stabilised ones, it is not so heavy that you will notice this; it is light enough to be carried easily all day long.
The device is powered by two CR2 disposable lithium batteries. These are cylindrical camera batteries about half as long as an AA cell, delivering 3v each (combined voltage of 6v). The device comes supplied with two new batteries in their original wrapping; I don't know how long these last since I'm still on the original pair. The batteries aren't commonplace though, so best to buy some in from an online supplier like eBay.
Overall this entire device works and does what it is claimed to do very well indeed, and is a fraction of the price of competitor devices such as the various Japanese and Russian stabilised binoculars. If you need a stabilised 10x monocular, then this is the one to buy!

A very effective commercial green laser
This is a bright green laser in an aluminium, black-painted housing that resembles that of a military-type torch, with a similar push-button switch on the back of the unit. It is powered by the extremely common 18650 lithium battery, which is most easily purchased from vape shops or online these days.
The unit was supplied with a diffraction grating end-piece, which splits the single beam into a geometric pattern of dots. Both these and the normal single beam are well formed and spread out very little at distance.
All in all, this is a very useful and durable-feeling device (the laser emitter is deeply recessed inside the head housing and is most unlikely to be accidentally damaged) which does the job very well indeed. The only caveat is that no batteries or chargers are supplied, but as I say, these can easily be purchased online or in a high street vape shop.
