Sedimentology and Stratigraphy by Gary Nichols (Paperback, 2009)
    23 Oct, 2017
    Essential for learning sed/strat
This is the standard textbook for introducing undergrads to sed/strat for a reason. It goes through all sed rocks and depositional environments clearly and systematically. Comes with cd for even more illustrations and photo examples (though it's an excellent standalone book anyhow). The more advanced aspects of stratigraphy are introduced including brief chapters on isotope geochronology (explaining techniques and limitations of common decay systems), and sequence stratigraphy (the concise description of this is a pleasure to read rather than diving straight into case studies on the subject). I quite like the way references for further reading are only a few key things listed at the end of each chapter, rather than the dissertation style of say Tucker's 'Sedimentary Petrology', where all the in-text citations can get a bit overwhelming.
Sedimentary Rocks in the Field: A Colour Guide by Dorrik A. V. Stow (Paperback,…

    Invaluable book for sedimentary stuff
Very useful for applying all the sedimentology and stratigraphy to field observations, this book is stuffed full of colour photos of all the structures and features you could ever dream of. It does a great job of explaining all the sed/strat stuff in the first half also. Handy small size for so much content, waterproof cover, and things like grain size/morphology charts for use in the field.

    Philips HR1858/97 650 watt juicer
An excellent juicer! I have owned several philips juicers, believing that they represent the best value for money in terms of home juiceing, and this model is no exception. I bought this particular model to use at work and it has not dissapointed, it delivers to almost exactly the same standard as the philips 1861 'aluminium' juicer (which has a 700 watt motor) and will cost you about half the price. The only difference easily noticeable is that this model is slightly noisier, but not a real problem unless you want to be juicing stuff at 3am. This juicer makes light work of apples - small enough and you don't even have to chop them, just chuck them straight in; pineapple, citrus fruits (you can leave the skin on if you like, but makes it a lot more zesty), grapes, berries, carrots, cucumber, broccoli, celery and most other non fibrous fruit or veg you may wish to juice. (i.e. no bananas!) I have also found that a good amount of juice is extracted using this juicer, and it comes with a handy little jug that fits the spout so you don't miss a drop and can see how much you're getting via the measurements on the side. I would definitely reccommend this product to anyone who wishes to buy a good juicer without wanting to fork out double the money on the philips 1861 juicer.
