Nice low angle plane
I have had nothing but trouble with my previous low angle 60 1/2 from another manufacturer. The blade steel was terrible and the edge used to crumble regularly. After re-hardening it in my forge performance was slightly better but the blade would still chip or crumble frequently. A back bevel helped slightly, but not a great deal.
The plane blade on this 69 1/2 is excellent, and I now understand why low angle planes are becoming popular. It does a lovely job with end grain, and is just big and heavy enough to use on a shooting board with small workpieces.
Mine was bought half price as a factory second, but I find it hard to find any cosmetic fault. The only fault I can find is a miniscule chip in the top of the blade about 1/2 an inch from the cutting edge. I suppose in about 30 years of sharpening it might become an issue, but I always round the corners on the blade so it will probably be insignificant when I reach it anyway.
I put a 90 degree angle on my old low angle plane blade and use it like a scraper now, usually on changing grain around knots. At least it serves some purpose and the 2mm thick edge doesn't crumble.
The 69 1/2 has been perfect so far, the blade keeps an edge well and the extra weight helps when using it on a shooting board. The blade sits well on the seating at the mouth of the plane so no problems with chatter have been experienced.
This is the second Rider plane I have purchased, the other being a no 90 bullnose. My larger planes are pre-1960 Record or Stanley, and I find the Riders have comparable build quality. I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a low angle block plane.

Saw file
Bahco currently make the best available saw files since Nicholson quality went through the floor! I do sharpen my saws with other files in the range, but this size I find perfect to file guitar nuts with!

Cracking set of pickups
Really like these pickups. I used to hand wind pickups at home every now and again, and these are just as good as anything I can make. Therefore they are a lot more convenient and my winding rig has been retired for a couple of years now! Check out Vanson's Alnico 2 '57s as well, I like them too! I have tried a couple of Seymour Duncan models to compare and they didn't add anything to the sound, so the Vanson's are very price competitive!
