"Salem Branch": Parallel Time ?
1 of 2 found this helpful "Dark Shadows: Salem Branch", Overall, is not as good as Parker's previous novel, "Angelique's Descent". The main story is about Angelique's previous life in 1692 as Miranda DuVal. According to this novel, Miranda had supernatural powers BEFORE she ever sold her soul to Diabolu &that she was tricked into signing Judah Zachery's Black Book . She thought she was signing for the schoolmaster's classes !!! ( Sounds like an attempt to whitewash Angelique's Black Arts.)To me, Miranda / Angelique has always been a servant girl who was persuaded by Judah Zachery that she could better herself by selling her soul for supernatural power. Angelique's mistake was in thinking she could find happiness through diabolic powers. Time &again , by its very nature, her Black Arts have only brought her &others misery, yet she can not or will not learn from her mistakes ( unless possibly in 1840). I'm one of those who have a hard time accepting Angelique as Barnabas' "one true love". ( Incidently you will be surprised who Angelique winds up with in "Salem Branch". It's not Barnabas. Pick the least likeliest person &that's whom Angelique ends up with in the novel.) The other story is about Barnabas Collins in 1971 realizing that life as a vampire is preferable to his cure. Apparently, he forgets all the innocents ( Pansy Faye, Carl Collins &others) he murdered as a vampire. Innocents were to die just so Barnabas could enjoy the immortality of being a vampire ?? This is so out-of-character for the reluctant vampire of the TV series. The novel ends with 1 of the weirdest "happily-ever-after" endings I've ever read. You can read this novel if you can accept these 2 premises. Otherwise ,S.E. Hinton's "Hawke Harbor" is more faithful to DS continuity than this novel is. Recommended if you like Anne Rice vampires but not if you enjoy DS continuity. Think of it as a Parallel Time novel. That's how I got through it. No worse than a Marilyn Ross Novel.
