15K disks versus SSD - price versus power
These were second hand disks that we purchased to replace failed units (they worked), as such this review will concentrate on these disks versus the SSD alternatives in a server environment. First up, there have been long term read/write problems of reliability with SSD technology, and given their expense this is not at all good. The SSD's are slightly faster however (maybe 7%) but once you have them in a RAID 10 or 60 they show little benefit as the bigger bottleneck will probably be your network! The best way to fix this is to go 10Gbe of course but this means new cards on your servers, new switches and a host of further expenditure to go nowhere really fast(er). In summary therefore, and at this point in time (April 2017), we feel that a RAID built on a series of second hand 15K disks costing around £130 each for 600Gb. is a better price/performance solution than paying out for SSD's, however if the reliabity of the latter can be improved and the price comes down, that situation would change not least as the SSD's use significantly less power and as this is charged for by any Data Centre may tip the balance in their favour eventually.
Parrot jungle Swing toy African Greys, Amazons Cockatoos Macaws

Nice toy and would suit a Macaw but pricey by the time you've added carriage
We liked this toy and so did our Macaw, however we hadn't anticipated the Postage which drove the total cost up to in excess of £30.00 which is in my view a but steep for this toy which doesn't last long in the Beak of a Macaw! Summary, good but overpriced
Pepwave Surf SOHO MK3 Router with 802.11ac WiFi

This is the unit you want to buy if you're serious about your home or Office security
Don't waste your time or money on flashy looking high end consumer units like the Netgear R8000's which claim to be secure but have more (obvious) holes in them than a Tetleys Tea bag :-) Welcome to my review, I'm an IT security specialist with 30 years under my belt. First up, this unit allows to to access and configure it purely from https in your web browser rather than http - this is a big deal, as anything sent over http can be easily seen by a bad actor or MitM attack - the Netgears don't even offer the option . . Second, this unit does not have the convenient but disastrously insecure WPA Pin wireless system on it, adding additional security. Thirdly, you can (and should) separate your Wireless network IP range from your local (or wired) devices IP range and this unit makes it easy. The benefit of this is that if someone does manage to access your wi-fi without permission, they're only going to see wireless devices and no core hardware (hopefully) :-) Now for the non techy stuff :-) The unit is easy to set up, sits neatly behind your current ISP supplied modem/router (even if you don't have a static IP) and creates a second NAT behind it relegating the traffic coming from your (insecure and almost certainly outdated) Modem/router supplied by your ISP to 'untrusted' status as it should be, giving you excellent protection from a wide range of bad actors, hackers and of course state sponsored snoopers. Finally, and like the high end comsumer units, the Pepwave offers the ability to control the types of websites visited (blocking pornographic or violent content for instance) and as it is not a 'mass market' device is relatively unlikely to be targetted by hacking 'Bots' which will always be written to attack mainstream products for maximum impact. So as I said at the beginning - if you're serious about security then buy one of these! If you just want to pose then the Netgears look cool and who cares if they leave your front door wide open?!!!
