A Flood of Poppy Quirkyness
1 of 1 found this helpful Few bands show such a mastery of pop music like "They Might Be Giants". They stand over decades worth of pop music and pick and choose influences. Then they add a layer of quirky lyrics that really make it a "They Might Be Giants" album. The lyrics are constantly odd and strangely compelling. I listen with child-like curiosity waiting to hear what strange things they'll say next.
"Flood" is arguably one of the biggest little albums of the past decade. The style rings with 80's synth-pop with 90's inovation all tied up with fimilar pop formulas and strange lyrics. The album is self concisly silly, including its own theme music about itself.
The album's selling points are the hit songs "Birdhouse in Your Soul", "Particle Man", and "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)". These songs are sure to bring back memories for those who grew up in the 90's watching "Tiny Toons".
The only downside is that some songs seem too short and gimmicky. Some songs reach a point where you start to think "oh, thats where they're going with this" and get tiring. However these songs are short and are usually over before you start complaining leaving with another song to sink your teeth into. This formula leaves the listener with few substantive songs that they'll remember later, however it is fun while you are listening.
Over all it is an enjoyable album worth the listening. Buy it for the hits, stick around for the quirkiness.

Punk rock on acid
Although not the best Flaming Lips album, it is defiantly one of the most underrated and a must own for any Flaming Lips fan. Some songs sting with this "punk rock on acid" feel. The bands enthusiasm is spelled out in every song. Songs like "The Sun" and "Felt Good to Burn" are remencent of The Beatles's trippy experimentation. Some songs are haunting and eerily beutiful while others are energizing sing-along types.
The album flows well, with enough variety to be interesting; however it is over quickly. This is one of those albums where it is best to listen to it with earphones to get the entire experience the Flaming Lips intended. Overall a fun, interesting album although brief.

It is great to have a Tom Servo, but tricky to put together.
I've wanted my own Tom Servo since I was a kid. Now I have one. However, I found that assembly to be a bit difficult at times. This is because the instructions were not that clear. It would have been nice to have one comprehensive set of instructions to follow. In the end though, I am pleased with the results.
