Cheap wind-up radio with lightsource
5 of 5 found this helpful After spending a summer living in a van I grew to respect electricity and the cost and waste involved in using battery appliances, so when I started looking for a radio for the bathroom I chose to go down the wind-up route. The Sony unit is smaller than the previous wind up radios I have owned (almost pocket sized in fact), and the "charging vs. listening" ratio also seems to be better as well, though that is hard to quantify. It is fairly well engineered, I would have preferred a waterproof unit, (Sony do not appear give the unit a rating for protection against moisture/water) but I'm happy to leave the unit in my bathroom without too many fears. The sound quality is not bad for a small mono radio, and reception (even in bad areas) is clear and mainly interference free. The light wasn't a feature I bought this unit for, but I have been pleasantly surprised with the focused LED's brightness. The unit also has a "soft" light on top which is too dim to be used as a light source, but makes a good night light. Both lights do decrease the time of radio play significantly, as you would expect.
If this unit was stolen or lost I wouldn't hesitate in replacing it with exactly the same unit. I'm thinking of buying another to keep in my toolbox for work, though it wouldn't be suitable for loud building sites (but spot on for Radio 4 in an office, for example)
