    Pulley drive returns in awe
I had particular use for pulley/idler driven model, not a more advanced one. Namely, to replace a broken type in a Saba music center, also gotten cheap on ebay.de. The 1228 has mid-quality tonarm, but surprisingly stable speed/strobe and quiet and smooth automatics/mechanism, complete with a conventional and very elaborate Dual antiscating - more than just a spring loaded type. In fact, tonarm proved to work as fine, faithfully keeping track from .5 tracking force onwards. The only drawbacks could be esthetic - a smallish platter diameter and (obsolete) shaky table suspension. But those did not bother me since the music center was as vintage and mid-class. Alas, pulley drive did tell from a lately adopted belt and DD models - in a somewhat rough and thick staging, but that too combined well with the machine's overall sound coloration. What may concern a potential buyer of 1228 (and other worthy pulley drives) is whether to forego this for a direct drive. Well, DD will sound harsher and analytical whereas an older Dual or Elac bring out the character from vinyl.

    won't get fooled again?
I'd hate doing lip service to ebay customers singing hosannas blindfolfd, so first thing - mind how you go about pillar type speakers where this Quadral belongs. Do partner with active sub (same model line boasts superb one!) unless you use a minisystem or a boombox. Forget about standalone stereo hi-fi sound of ANY speaker-box housing (no matter how many!) woofer under 8". That heeded, do welcome the Quadrals' bright, forward and wide, a tad aggresive and digitally analitic presentation of music. The brand economized with replacing trademark ribbon tweeter here with easier made dome type - albeit phase devider provided. But You Can't Always Get What You Want - get what you need, okay? Well, I overlook power rating and bi- or single-wiring aspects here. In pillar type, native born front speakers in a home system configuration those are nominal, not actual values. Good speakers though, provided one knows how...

Onkyo stereo receiver 4500 Mk 2 - low price meets fabulous sound
Even with broken Loudness switch on the purchased sample, the buy was highly opportune and unique since intact one would cost twice the price. The model is actually second best (to 6500) while the entire line of "500's" is second to none - with Onkyo or the competing brands. The layout is classic Onkyo with "hat type" output transistors (as good as Sony FETs) and massive caps and transformer to boot. I was after an affordable alternative to Onkyo A10 integrated, and I landed with pretty much same caliber (and wpc power ratings!) of celebrated Onkyo sound, bright cute highs and well rounded ground-shaking mid/lows. I am absolutely positive that nothing else sounds as contagious and exuberant as Onkyo circa 70s. Radio wasn't the point as in my location ain't no worthy broadcasters. But the reception quality is on par. I am presently to fix the Loudness, and - talking about the model's oddity - Tape Inputs (of 3 Tape In/Outs) here double as Aux, and the luxury size may not fit the 44 cm slot of a typical rack. But that stunning lo-o-ong brushed metal front recalls a Buick of 60s era and it can't be traded off. Great, on all counts. Just 1 point less for the button in my kill. Hunt on for yours.
