A versatile bounce flash that's good value for money.
I bought this to give me more punch than the flash bundled with the X-T1. A major consideration was that it enables the light to be bounced - a HUGE failing with the more expensive EF-X20. It is pretty versatile with the ability to adjust EV by up to I full stop either way and has a useful little diffuser built into the unit. Battery life seems fine as I've taken over 150 images using the EF-20 and it's still recycling at the same rate. Obviously the more powerful EF-42 would have the edge here as it uses 4 AA batteries but for the power output, bounce and adjustability, this offers good value for money.
My only quibble is that opening the battery compartment is fiddly and the small, plastic switch should be made to stand more proud of the surface to give more purchase on it. I have to prise it out with my fingernails at the same time as I'm trying to push it down - not an easy task. Fujifilm is usually pretty good at ergonomics - just hold the X-T1 to see how natural and comfortable it feels - but they should rethink the access to the battery compartment. Other than that small niggle, I can thoroughly recommend this to Fuji X-series users.

An engineering miracle!
1 of 1 found this helpful The Contax AX is unique among high-end 35mm SLR cameras in ebing designed to provide full auto-focus using manual focus lenses. Zeiss, who made the extraordinary glassware for the Contax 35mm and 645 cameras, recognised that AF was becoming popular and asked Contax engineers to look at the problem as they did not wish to compromise the quality of their lenses merely to accommodate AF mechanisms. (Just compare the buid-quality of their MF 80mm 1.4 Planar with the 85mm 1.4 N AF Planar - the older lens is unquestionably more sturdy and durable) The AX was the solution - the camera produces the AF by moving the entire film plane back and forth inside the camera body to create the focus.
It makes the body a little more deep than most conventional 35mm SLRs but the AX is lighter than the RTSIII and its ergonomics make it a joy to hold and use.
The ceramic rail and ultrasonic motor are very quiet in operation and focus is assisted in poor light by a beam emitter. With a 1/6000s top speed, internal motor drive, AF and MF capability, that alone would be an impressive camera. But it does not end there.
Because of the brilliant back-focusing mechanism, the Contax AX turns virtually any lens used on it - Zeiss, Yashica or 3rd party - into a Macro lens. It is amazing to peer through the viewfinder and photograph objects that are way inside the minimum focus for the given lens. Finally, it can also be used in conjunction with its D-8 Data Back which adds another level of sophistication to the operation of the camera.
For anyone who has, or hopes to have some C/Y Zeiss lenses, this is probably even better than the RTSIII (referred to as the Rolls Royce of SLRs) at getting the most from their glass. The AX cost a fortune when it was released and now represents a real bargain as a used item. Grab one and be amazed!

Sharpness and high contrast defined - the exemplar for standard lenses.
Having removed the damaged ring that once held a rubber hood, the lens was back to its original condition - superb. This is one of the best standard lenses ever made and is even sharper wide open than its big brother, the legendary f1.4 Planar. Back in the 1980s and 1990s it was used as the exemplar against which other 50mm lenses were judged as it often outperformed the lab tests used by photographic magazines. It is metal bodied and yet very light. This is the original AE version - it lacks the multi-mode metering lug that was later used following the introduction of the Contax 159 camera - and remains a stellar performer. Edge-to-edge definition is very good and is outstanding from f2.8 to f11. The T* coatings handle flare superbly - it is very difficult to generate flare with this lens - and contrast is excellent. When used with adapters on digital cameras, it still performs at its best with no evidence of chroma; I use this with a Canon DSLR and an Olympus E-M1 and its bright image makes manual focusing a breeze. My recommendation is that if you see one, grab it; you won't be disappointed and you'll get to see what all the fuss is about when it comes to glass from Carl Zeiss of Oberkochen.
