Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional 12 Review
Introduction: NaturallySpeaking Ver. 12 includes over 100 new features and enhancements, including: improved accuracy, Hotmail/Gmail support, IE9 support, improved Firefox & Chrome support, Android support, the ability to disable commands, significantly improved built-in tutorials, smart formatting, and improvements to the microphone Asleep state (to prevent the microphone from accidentally waking up). In the professional versions, you’ll also find remote dictation support for Windows 7 Ultimate Server and Windows Server 2008. In our opinion, though, the most significant improvement has got to be the increase in SPEED. The two issues our clients found most problematic with Ver. 11 were speed (a slight overall lag in time before the spoken words appeared on the screen, making Ver. 11 slower than Ver. 10) and latency issues (unusually long delays before the spoken words appeared on the screen). Ver. 12 appears not only to be much faster than Ver. 11, but also faster than Ver. 10, with seemingly no latency. While Ver. 11 introduced dual core multi-threading, Ver. 12 upped the ante by introducing true parallel processing (using both processors simultaneously, rather than bouncing back and forth as was the case with Ver. 11). Since we use voice commands throughout our KnowBrainer 2011/2012 command utility, we were really impressed with the two new (British and American English) text-to-speech readers. There is nothing like hearing the velvety female response of “Yes, boss” when we say the KnowBrainer “Computer” command. Check out the following list of new features we found notable, both pro and con. Pros: ● NaturallySpeaking 10 introduced BestMatch III (trigram algorithms). NaturallySpeaking 11 introduced BestMatch IV (quad gram algorithms) and dual core processing. NaturallySpeaking 12 introduces BestMatch V. Also new to Ver. 12, is speech model parallel (simultaneous) dual core multithreading, which is not only faster in BestMatch V, but also increases speed in BestMatch III and IV (for slower computers). ● The Ver. 12 installation bundles a new Adobe Flash plugin. This eliminates the problem of a SendKeys or Hookerr error which some users (of previous versions of NaturallySpeaking) have been experiencing. ● Dictation speed (how long it takes one’s dictation to appear as words in the document) appears faster than previous versions. 3 ● While we were unable to verify Nuance’s 20% higher accuracy claim (translation = 20% fewer errors), we were able to verify modest accuracy gains. Any significant error reduction saves valuable (correction) time, not to mention reducing frustration. ● Enhanced webmail support, including significantly improved support for Gmail and Hotmail, will be a definite plus for many users. Cons: ● In Ver. 12, DNS still has no numbering feature. One of the most useful and impressive features in WSR (Windows Speech Recognition) is its ability to number every control in a Window. We love that and, because of our work for the physically challenged, have always hoped to see something similar in DNS. Samson AirLine Micro Condenser Microphone Review
Introduction: The Airline Micro is Samson’s latest patented belt packless UHF wireless microphone. Like its big brother, the Airline 77, the Airline Micro features a 300 foot range at a lower price and a much smaller foot print. Airline Micro Advantages: •Without a doubt, the Airline Micro has all but cornered the market on cute. •We found the “over the ear clip” design to be comfortable even after several hours of use. •Both the base station and the headset are very light and low-profile as compared to the heavier Airline 77. •The Airline Micro has an enormous edge in portability because of its small stature and the fact that it doesn't require an AC outlet to power the base station, like the Airline 77. •Good noise cancellation. •Excellent microphone for dictating while leaning back on a cushion. The Airline 77 is not well-suited to leaning back in a chair or bed because it wraps around the back of your head. •KnowBrainer Accuracy rating of 97%. •KnowBrainer noise cancellation rating of 8 out of 10. •Priced below the Airline 77. •The receiver and transmitter include lithium-ion rechargeable batteries which eliminate the need of having to change batteries, as in the case of the Airline 77. •You don't have to worry about pointing the microphone towards your mouth because it's Omni directional (unlike the Airline 77). •You can position the microphone on either side of your head (unlike the Airline 77) but you will only have easy access to the universal Power/Mute/Volume button when it is positioned on your left ear. •The Airline Micro is perfect for travel and should easily fit in your computer bag, shirt pocket or the included padded transport case. •2 year manufacturer warranty. Airline 77 Advantages: •KnowBrainer accuracy rating of 100% (a full 3 percentage points higher than the Airline Micro). •KnowBrainer noise cancellation rating of 9 out of 10 (higher than the Airline Micro). •Includes numerous additional controls ranging from 2 LED meters to an independent volume and squelch. •Includes both balanced and unbalanced outputs. The balanced XLR output has a slight edge over the unbalanced output when used for speech recognition. •The Airline Micro takes 3 times longer to put on your ear and position the microphone as compared to the Airline 77 which is sturdier and maintains its shape better. •The Airline 77 includes a significantly larger professional microphone diaphragm that can handle more punishment. •Includes a noise gate which limits volume peaks and dips to keep the volume output level which helps with speech recognition accuracy. •Does not rely on an integrated battery in the event you forget to turn your microphone off because the Airline 77 utilizes a single AAA battery. •The Airline 77 includes a 3 year warranty. Conclusions: The Airline Micro has the edge on price, low-profile and portability. If you require an accurate wireless microphone that is noise canceling enough to use in an airport or subway, the Airline Micro is the microphone for you. If you are physically disabled and can't wear a microphone on the back of your head, it would also be an excellent choice. Not requiring an AC outlet and including the ability to charge it’s built in batteries via a USB port is frosting on the cake. However, if you don't mind spending a little more and don’t require portability, such as for use on a workstation, the Airline 77 would be the clear-cut winner with 3% higher accuracy.
