Reading this? You already know it's a great book.
Barry Hughart has written only three books, the award winning BRIDGE OF BIRDS being his first. Read the extant reviews on Amazon.com or LibraryThing.com and you'll see pretty much universal acclaim (which I believe is deserved). Basically, this is one entertaining and fun read. Serious China scholars are known to hate this book.
Unsigned hardcover 1st editions of BRIDGE OF BIRDS, with dust jackets, are fairly common. Prices can range from $20 to $300 dollars, but most of the high end prices are currently for suckers. You probably shouldn't pay more than $50-$75 for a fine, unsigned 1st edition hard cover, with dust jacket. This specific copy is my third 1st edition and the one in the worst shape (and I'd classify it as "Good +"). I got it for a little over $20, including shipping. This was a good deal, not awesome.
First editions of the hard cover BRIDGE OF BIRDS which are signed by Hughart are very rare. I think most people who own them aren't selling them. Signed and inscribed 1st editions are unheard of. I've only encountered one such, and I own it (bought on eBay years ago)!
Hughart's signature isn't uncommon on paperbacks (looks like he did a bookstore session or two) and should go for $30 or so.
There are two special omnibus editions of his three books, entitled THE CHRONICLES OF MASTER LI AND NUMBER TEN OX. A number of these were originally printed and sold with Hughart's autograph (see below).
In 1998, The Stars Our Destination published the first omnibus edition of THE CHRONICLES OF MASTER LI AND NUMBER TEN OX, with 500 signed by Hughart and illustrator, Kaja Foglio. These easily go for $300 and up and are rarely available. The unsigned trade editions of this edition can be had for $75 to $150 or so. Might be a paperback edition as well that should go for less (obviously).
A later omnibus edition of THE CHRONICLES OF MASTER LI AND NUMBER TEN OX was printed in 2008 by Subterranean Press. A run of 2000 "trade edition," cloth bound hard cover copies were printed and autographed by Hughart, and sold originally for $38. These currently go for $50 - $150.
An additional 200 leather bound copies of the 2008 Subterranean Press edition were printed, numbered, and signed by Hughart. These originally sold for $150. Current prices should be from $200 to $400. Of interest with the slip cased version is that it includes the only published copy of the original draft of BRIDGE OF BIRDS, a paperback with no ISBN. You might find some copies of the draft floating on the internet, but this version, in the slip cased edition, is the only one ever officially printed.
If you're looking for a reading copy, I recommend the inexpensive paperback editions (used and often in print). If you're a collector, don't overpay. When it comes to the signed and special editions, you're on your own!
Note: All prices cited are for 2011. As Mr. Hughart may someday receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, this could change.
