Sony DSC-G1 review
2 of 2 found this helpful This point and shoot is, for now, the top of the line. Maybe not the highest number of pixels with 6 million, but shear number of pixels isn't everything. With 2 gig of built in memory you can take shots right out of the box without the fear of not having enough space. It contains a Memory Stick Pro Duo slot for additional memory. Use the high speed version of the memory sticks for video recording. With 2 gig you have 1 hour and 34 minutes of 640x480 video recording.
What has not been very well documented about this camera is a new feature called Handheld Twilight. In this mode you can take pictures in very low light and it automagically takes multiple shots of the same scene and then combines them into one picture with very low noise content. It is simply amazing. After clicking the shutter button you will see the camera taking multiple shots and then it thinks for a second while it combines all of them into one shot. Why this feature hasn't been talked up more is puzzling to me.
It also has wireless but don't expect to be able to transfer pictures or movies to your pc until someone comes up with software to do so. Currently, you can only transfer between multiple G1's. The other major plus is the viewing screen. This screen has 4 times the normal pixels than other point and shoot cameras. In other words the pictures you see are absolutely wonderful as viewed. Also, it has a newly designed menu system which is easy to use but because of the shear amount of options takes some playing with the camera to become useful. But, isn't that what having a camera like this all about? I now take this camera with me everywhere I go. While it is a wee bit larger than the T1 series it is still small enough to either place in your pocket or in a belt camera case. With such a nice screen I suggest a camera case to keep it in good condition.
With a range of ISO to 1000 it is a sensitive camera. But use it sparingly as it will also introduce noise as any camera would. That is where the handheld twilight mode comes in. It automatically balances ISO to noise and does a very good job at it. The video it creates is in .mp4 format. Nice, as that is a very popular format.
The camera weighs in at 7.2 oz (204 g) body; 8.2 oz. (235 g) including battery and Memory Stick media. (Obtained from the specs). Zoom level of 3X which is very smooth. I am actually glad it didn't have a larger zoom because in this type of camera hand shaking becomes a real issue. But the Super Steady shot Image Stabilization works very well in the entire range of zoom levels.
The G1 also has a MP3 mode where you can listen to your music if you wanted to. It even has a stereo earphone output for your ear buds. Also, this music can be used for your slide show presentations which can be shown on your television by merely placing the camera on the included cradle and plugging the included video cable to your television. The cradle is also used as a charging stand and USB interface to your computer.
In all the camera is a very well thought out device. It has a ton of useful options which I have no room to share here. Am I happy I purchased it? You bet. I paid $495 for mine. Obviously, this will go down over time but I am happy with the results I am getting from it.
I am merely a typical user who wanted an upgraded point and shoot. I certainly got it in spades. I certainly would purchase it again. Hopefully, you have found this review useful.

Best portable HF antenna Sony ever made. Many times you can’t hear a station without it.
