A fantastic 1/48 Do-17 is finally here
As a child, I built many WW2 airplane models in all scales. Among them was Monogram's classic little 1/72 Dornier Do-17, which represented one of the iconic planes of the Battle of Britain. I always dreamed of having one in 1/48 scale, which I regard as ideal for WW2 planes - big enough for detail, but not too big for a bookshelf. The need for such a kit has been apparent since Monogram issued their Heinkel 111 in the early 1990s. Now, a new Russian manufacturer, ICM, has filled this void with a high quality kit that equals the best Japanese standards. The detailed parts are finely molded in gray plastic, fit well and feature crisp details and recessed panel lines. Little is needed but paint and glue to make an outstanding build of the "Flying Pencil". Even no aftermarket decals are needed, as the kit includes very thin, accurately registered markings for 2 Battle of Britain Dorniers. For modelers attached to the planes of 'their finest hour', this kit is a beautiful addition to the shelf. I bought mine from a UK seller on ebay right after the Brexit vote as a tribute. Just order it!

Something close to the very best swing band CD set - Goodman at his peak
This set is a desert island disc for swing fans. It captures the Goodman band at its very zenith in the late 30s. All the standards are there - King Porter, Savoy, Sometimes I'm Happy plus all the unforgettable Helen Ward numbers. The Bluebird single Sing, Sing, Sing is extracted from this set if highlights are your interest. But you will miss essential Goodman classics like When Buddha Smiles, House Hop and You Turned the Tables. An essential companion to this set is the Small Groups Recordings set by RCA/Bluebird, which captures the Goodman Trio & Quartet at the same time as these recordings.
