My favorite camera: the Panasonic Lumix DMC-Z3 ( TZ-7 )
4 of 4 found this helpful I like the most the solid feel of this camera and the zoom range its Leica lens offers. I can go from wide angle for some scenery shots and tight indoor shots to telephoto shots that can still be hand held without the need of a tripod or the bulk of a bridge type camera. For everything in between, this ZS3 can handle beautifully.
It is fairly responsive for a digital camera, meaning that I don't have to wait between shots or for things to happen after a button is pushed.
I love the resuts : the photos it takes are beautiful so I don't have to erase
too many bad shots or retake the same pose.
It can take short movies too but this is a feature I don't use often.
I decided on this Panasonic model because it answers most of my photographic needs and I chose it over the newer DMC-ZS5 (TZ-8) because it has a sharper, larger viewing screen and a convenient HDMI outlet to connect to my TV.
There is no perfect camera, but with it looks, its feel, its capabilities, I consider my Panasonic DMC -Z3 the best all around camera.

Another victim of smart phones and tablets
Camera manufacturers are phasing out this type of cameras as only people without a smart phone or a tablet will need them. They still take good photos and videos but are no match for the new crop of more advanced cameras sporting larger sensors. Except long range zoom cameras, others like these with 1/2.3 sensors will disappear from the market.

This old Canon model best meets the requirements of the intebded user.
1 of 1 found this helpful I need a camera to give to a first time user , a student in a third world country and I chose this decade-old Canon . Although it is bulky and has a smallish LCD screen by today's standard, it is powered by the very readily available AA batteries , has an optical viewfinder to supplement the LCD and can focus near enough to the subject for life-size close-ups.For storage, this Canon does not require exclusive and expensive memory cards such as XD and memory stick but uses
the common SD. Another alternative is the versatile)(also old and more expensive) Pentax MX4. I stay clear of Sony, Fuji and Olympus cameras of the same vintage because they require non standard memory cards.
