A concert by the choir heard in the film The Chorus.
This dvd consists of footage from two live concerts performed by the choir "Les Petits Enfants de Saint Marc", which featured in the French film "Les Choristes". I already owned a cd of the film's soundtrack, so hesitated before buying, as I wasn't sure whether it would be worth spending out on this as well. But, then a copy appeared on ebay, and I took the plunge. I'm really glad I did. The choir consists of about 30 boys and girls, aged (I would guess) between 11-15 years, dressed uniformly in dark tops, calf-length bell-bottom trousers and white socks. (If they were dismayed at having to wear these outfits, it didn't show!) The setting is kept very simple - no props or gimmicks, with the stage lit by spotlights and candles, and the overall effect is enchanting. The concert has 24 pieces (2 of which are encores). Eight are taken from the film, and include the gorgeous Cerf-volant ("Kite"), and the others cover a range from Faure to Rutter. The performance manages to balance energy and enthusiasm with vocal skill and control in such a way that, while the youngsters' talent is showcased, the actual music remains central. The 4 soloists have beautiful voices, with Jean-Baptiste Maunier standing out particularly. But there is no self-satisfaction or arrogance on display. Audience applause is met with a modest bow, and an occasional shy smile. It is a gem of a concert - and the sort of dvd you could watch multiple times without tiring of it. At 70 minutes in length, not including some behind-the-scenes footage (which has subtitles if you want these), it is shorter than many music dvds, but the performance quality more than compensates for this. I can't recommend it highly enough.

A 13 track cd and 19 track dvd combination
Now, I don't listen to this type of music very frequently, preferring classical, but a friend said she'd heard some McFly she liked, so I got her this for her birthday - and inadvertently got a second copy (I was losing one auction, so put a bid in another, and then somehow managed to win both!). I was going to sell it on, but, having played it, I don't want to. The cd has 13 tracks and is a good mix of fast, energetic numbers ("We are the young", "Don't stop me now") with slower numbers ("Bubblewrap", "Walk in the sun"), and others that successfully blend both styles in one song (the very catchy "Sorry's not good enough" - my personal favourite). "Transylvania" starts with a motif from a Bach toccata, which made me feel at home, and is reminiscent of Queen's "Bohemian rhapsody" in parts, while the introduction to "We are the young" brings to mind Meatloaf. Generally, the lyrics are not particularly profound, and you can't always decipher these (although there is an accompanying booklet to fill in the gaps), but, musically, these pieces are well-constructed and satisfying to listen to. The voices are individually good, but the real strength is the way these harmonise, producing a very distinctive sound. The cd has one quirk. When the 13th track ("Baby's coming back") finishes, the disc continues to turn, and, after 5 minutes silence, there is an extra song. This is not listed on the box or with the lyrics, but is mentioned as "Silence is a scary sound" in the song credits. Very droll! The dvd comprises 80 minutes of footage of a tour concert at Wembley and the picture quality is superb. It has 5 tracks from the accompanying cd and 11 others, presumably from their previous 2 albums, plus a really excellent drum solo. The performance is extremely lively (a lot of hopping and jumping around), with a good time clearly being had by both the boys and their fans. This is a group who obviously love playing live, and believe in the music they're presenting. The enthusiasm is infectious and you can't help but feel lifted by watching them. I think the combination of cd + dvd makes this an excellent product - and great value, especially if you get it on eBay (both my purchases were brand new bargains). On the strength of it, I may now invest in copies of their earlier albums.

20 tracks from the film, a mix of orchestral & vocal.
All the tracks are pleasant to listen to, and evoke the period of the film well (1930s & 40s), but I bought this specifically for two of Will Young's contributions - "All the things you are" and "Girl in the little green hat". Though in very contrasting styles - the 1st full of heartfelt longing, the 2nd a lively number at an exceptionally jaunty pace that demands incredibly crisp diction - he manages to create a mini-masterpiece of each with a delivery that seems effortless. Try singing along to the second and you will see what an achievement that is!
