A heart-wrenching and inspiring watch
This 10-part miniseries is a truly riveting watch following the stories of three Marines fighting in the Pacific during World War II. It is thought provoking, visceral at times, and focuses on the bonds formed between the Marines during tragic and horrifying times. Unlike its precursor, Band of Brothers, The Pacific focuses on the journey before, during, and after the war, documenting the lasting effects of trauma on each individual man. Notably, my favourite character, Eugene Sledge, enters the war as a naive sheltered boy and, during his time as a Marine, slowly falls from grace and begins to lose his humanity; the noticeable change from innocence to hardened resignation is a truly harrowing thing to watch and performed so beautifully on screen. I would recommend this series to anyone with an interest in war films and series, but (as cliched as it is to say) it is not for the faint-hearted, particularly with the reminder that these atrocities are not at all a work of fiction. A fantastic show with inspiring acting, stunning cinematography, and three incredibly well-written and entwined stories weaving throughout one of the most horrendous events in history.
