Excellent HDMI Freeview Player and Recorder
3 of 3 found this helpful I like Samsung kit anyhow and have a fair bit of it around the house, but I am not biased - I know when I don't like something - and I know when I do. The Samsung DVD-SH855 I do.
Simple to setup - just connect a HDMI cable to your HD ready TV, stick in a arieal supply and auto-discover the digital stations. My rig found the full 68 UK TV and radio stations instantly.
I have a HD cam-corder which I connected to the front of the box using a DV cable (sadly no HDMI input on the 855M) and shoved a DVD+RW into the slot and was instantly dumping my recently recorded sons school play direct onto a DVD. The quality was DVD quality and not HD obviously but a great compromise especially as the Samsung player has a reasonable upscaler for non HD source output through a HDMI connected device. You certainly don't get the big black pixilation that you get when playing normal DVD through widescreen 48" LCD panel.
It certainly takes the drudgery out of recording stuff on your Sky box and then downloading through a PC connected DV input to create a DVD. Press two buttons and the job is done.
Samsung is great quality and often simple to use. The DVD-SH855M is both of these. I like simple.
Can't compare this box to any Sony/JVC/Panasonic equivalents as I haven't tried them - but I can say this box does exactly what I wanted it for with ease and enough quality to keep me happy. It will do me.
I guess, now I think of it, it's a part way stepping stone prior to when they bring out pure HD simplistic and cheap recording. It gives you HD output, all be it upscaled, and DVD quality recording.
