Self tapping threads in a Zinc diecasting?
The fit and finish are excellent and the service as a replacement is totally as expected. But in my engineering opinion the use of "self-tapping" mounting bolts in a "Zinc based" casting to save the manufacturer's cost of cutting threads in a nominal $60 part is chintzy and foolish! Pre-tapping the holes most assuredly facilitated the installation in an space that was not in the mechanic's comfort zone. Trying to align the bolts during installation without pre-tapping the holes (while upside-down and backwards under the cutting deck) would have tripled the installation time at best. I recommend buying the part and then cutting the necessary threads to facilitate the installation. The part works very well when in service.
