Must-Have edition on Santa Fe passenger's golden age
I bought this book late in my collection on this subject and shouldn't have waited so long. Although there are several books on, or that include, this topic, most since this 1987 printing, this one holds strong. Not only are there a large number of photographs not seen in other works (always a point of pride for any author) but the text provides a wealth of details rarely seen to this degree elsewhere and all the while painting a wonderful picture of this extraordinary time gone by in a very enjoyable read. The chapter on Dome Cars and the El Capitan's High-Level cars is my favorite and presents a wealth of details across the spectrum that is not only richly informative, but really "puts you there" in the midst of the decisions, activities, and mood of the era. This is probably the best combination of photographs and text, both equally strong, with an easy and fun readability. Would that more color photographs were available, as this edition is all B&W, and only more recent books include color. Other companion books, all newer and also excellent, that I have and enjoy are:
Santa Fe Passenger Trains in the Streamlined Era (Dorin, TLC 2004)
Super Chief & El Capitan (Dorin, TLC 2005)
Santa Fe Through Passenger Service - Vol 1 (Stout, Morning Sun 2009)
each with strengths not found in the others.

The one book you really need!
Long awaited complete tome on the Series! Beautiful large format with loads of color photos.

Super choice for this need.
Very compact, great switch mechanisms, and a half-push of whichever button is off undoes the the one that's on, disconnecting both. A nice feature over the usual "one or the other".
