Galton Case By Ross Macdonald

Great detective novel with insights in human nature rather than strange plots & graphic violence.

This the first book I've read by Ross McDonald. It's a great detective novel in the Classic US style, written at a time (the 50's) when it wasn't yet necessary to lace a story with graphic violence and convoluted unlikely plots. This author has solid insights into human nature and human psychology, and that's what drives the story. The main character isn't a heavy drinker and doesn't have a troubled past from some war or other. He is his own man and simply good at his job Modern readers may wonder why he spends time in something called "phone booths" and why the people he calls actually pick up and answer on most occasions. I can compare with a couple of other writers in the same genre; Michael Connelly & James Lee Burke, and they bored me. Neither of them measure up to the quailties of McDonald. But then I am a person with old-fashioned values...
