The 1972 Eisenhower is a coin worth looking for, due to it's collectiblity.
The 1972 Eisenhower one dollar proof is a beautiful coin, and can be rare, under certain conditions. The Eisenhower Dollar for general circulation should have been minted several years before it was actually introduced in 1969, and the proof should have been minted for collector's purposes not long after.
Incidentally, I imagine that a limited mintage near silver( 90% or better, perhaps even 99.99% ) proof by the US Mint would have went over fantastically well for all years of production and a limited Eisenhower could still be produced in this day and age for avid coin collectors.
The actual Eisenhower obverse is a classic pose, one that coin collectors are used to seeing. But the reverse has a unique image that captured the excitement of that time- the Apollo 11 Moon Landing. This was the design used on all but the 1976 Bi-Centennial "Ike".
I remember at one time, the "Ike" was hard to find in circulation because people would stash them in their private collections. To me, that makes the "Ike" proof a very nice coin to add to anyone's collection.
Be sure to look for the three different reverse designs that were produced for the 1972 coin. The Type II, including the uncirculated "Ikes", in P and S "Proof" mintages, are very desirable. Pay special attention to the Type II design, which is considered a rare collectible, even in the lower grades. But in the higher grades, a 1972 MS 65 can be worth around $2000, and the 1972 MS 66 can command six figures, according to the Eisenhower Dollar Guide.
