    About

Tom Marshall is an award-winning* UK artist based between Poole and Bournemouth, in Dorset, on the south coast of England. His typically loose drawing style captures moments and tells stories, and features people, landscape, birds, and dogs- almost never working from photos and much of the time working from life- "plein air"- outside on location in pen and ink, watercolour and pastels. He also makes original printmaking- woodcuts, monoprints, drypoint, and uses intaglio techniques combined with oil paint to create pieces on copper, brass and aluminium.

    Acid Free (PH7 - 70) (1") 25mm X 66m Self Adhesive Hinging Tape.

I am happy to use it to seal edges of a sandwich of glass, mounted pic, and backing board.
It takes some time to get used to it as it is unforgiving if you get it in the wrong place. It is also very reluctant to stick to itself, which makes doing the corners more tricky, but overall, now I have practised a bit, I am happy to use it, as framing this way, you don't get bits of fluff, etc, trapped between glass and image, and you know that you aren't going to get a dust mite or something wandering around between picture and glass. I would not use it to attach a picture to a mount, though.

    Archival Hinging Tape 38mm x 66m

A strong tape. Much stickier than expected- tricky to reposition safely, so beware
I'm an artist trying to frame my pics professionally, not a professional framer. This is a waxy, plasticky tape, which is very sticky on the reverse. I have previously used tape that you wet to do T-hinges to fix pictures to mounts. Those tapes can be a pain, because if the air is damp, they get wrecked and all stick to themselves. You also need to wait for it all to dry out before completing the framing job. This is different. I was surprised at this, as it is just like the ph70 tape I use for other mounting jobs- not for fixing the artwork to the mountboard. It is hard to see the difference. Is it different? It has the advantages of being very easy to apply and quick to use- far more than the wetting kind of tape. However, I placed the tape and then decided that I wanted the picture in a different place in the mount, so went to remove the tape- tore the back of the picture and the mount, and I am not a very rough kind of person, so was very surprised. I asked the sellers about this, and they said that with care it can be removed, and without using water, etc. By doing it very very carefully, I did manage to remove the tape later on, but on anything precious- and that's why we're using archival tape- you want to know that you aren't going to tear things. I was ok, as it was a very thick paper, but had it been something delicate, I might have been in trouble. I am also not sure how well this will stick to itself- that's an advantage on the roll, but in places you will want to overlap it. My other thought is whether it will become a stronger or weaker bond over time. If stronger, I wonder how it will be removable. As a general tape this is probably pretty good and nice to use. For real archival work I would tread very cautiously, but remember, I am not a qualified framer, just trying to do my best.
Is, Aiken, Joan Hardback Book The Cheap Fast Free Post

    stunning
After a long time of not reading further in the Wolves of Willoughby Chase series (I stopped at Dido and Pa), I bought this one, and it is as good as the others I have read. But- it is different. I was a bit taken aback that the lead wasn't Dido or Simon, and that they are more or less absent from the story that's unfolding, so I was a bit slow to want to pick it up and read beyond the first couple of chapters. It's worth it, though. Once Is gets set off on her mission, I couldn't put it down. It brings together the Blastburn of Midnight is a Place and The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and it's a story with dramatic imagery- with bravery, injustice and much to think about- it paints pictures in your head in the way Joan Aiken and Pat Marriott's best books -like The Whispering Mountain, etc- do. It has a fair bit of gritty tragedy in it, and adventure. For 12 years and upwards, I would say. I will reread it again and again. I can't wait to read the next one.
