SELF INFLATING CAMPING MAT SINGLE ROLL PAD INFLATABLE BED SLEEPING MATTRESS BAG
19 Jul, 2016
Doesn't self-inflate, does burst easily.
I'd had a good run with what I thought was a similar mattress before. But after a few years of very regular use, it wasn't as comfortable as it used to be. I replaced it with this one, and because I was busy, stupidly didn't try it out before I got to the festival. Big mistake. Firstly, the mattress doesn't self-inflate. At all. Well, unless the inflation time is more than 4 hours, by which time it hadn't inflated at all. No amount of opening or closing the stopper/valve (or taking it clean out) made any difference. After waiting for 4 hours for it to inflate, I needed to sleep on it. No matter though, I thought, because I can blow it up by mouth/lung power. In order to do this, you have to remove the screw-valve/stopper completely. I started to blow, and the mattress sort of started to inflate, but kept twisting around on itself. I worried that perhaps I had blown too much air in, so I let some escape & put the stopper back in. The stopper takes about 6 turns to tighten though, and all the while more air is escaping. At no point did the mattress look anything like comfortable. It was lumpy, half-inflated and twisted. The description says this mattress is 2.5cm thick, which suggests it's going to be in the style of a Therma-rest, but even half-inflated (which is all that is possible with this item because of the inevitability of air escaping) it's more like 10cm, more like a li-lo than a therma-rest copy. The description is deceiving. Of course at times like this, and often before, you'll refer to the instruction manual, or piece of paper in this case. But your luck's out unless you can read Chinese as there is no translation. The only bit of English you'll see is on the puncture kit. And if your experience is anything like mine, you'll be needing that puncture kit, as the mattress burst the second I eased myself onto it. Now I'm not the smallest man in the world (and probably bigger than your average Chinese person) but if there's a maximum weight for it, I can't be expected to learn Chinese in order to find that out. Fortunately there was a camping supplies shop at the festival, who sold me a perfectly fine mattress for just £3 more than this. Does yourself a favour & buy something better.
