Familiar work in an unfamiliar light.
The Pre-Raphaelites aren't to everyone's taste, but they were a compelling group with a signature style, and this book shows them in an interesting and unusual light. We're all used to many of their iconic paintings and their use of bold colouring, but it's fascinating here to see the drawings that underpin their work. Somehow it all seems a bit more intimate, perhaps because the drawings are less familiar and flamboyant. Apart from the very superior quality prints presented here, I'd mention the splendid text by Colin Cruise, which will be useful to both fans of the PRB and complete novices, who will be grateful for his well informed and helpful contribution. Perhaps the book may even make a few new converts. Very highly recommended.

Still stands up.
1 of 1 found this helpful Any fan of something like Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone on BBC 6 will enjoy this. Ball park it's in Incredible String Band territory, and is of the same vintage. Listening back to a lot of stuff form x number of years ago can disappoint, with only nostalgia saving it. No so with this album, it still stands up very well indeed, and deserves its place as something of a classic album from the period. Lyrically and musically it has a weirdly contemporary feel to it. This is probably down to a vogue for all things folk inflected from Trembling Bells to Devendra Banhart, If you haven't heard this album and like the area of music I've just mentioned I recommend you check this out immediately - it won't disappoint.
Witchcraft. The Library of Esoterica by Pam Grossman, Jessica Hundley...

Engaging Informative and lavishly illustrated.
Thoughtful and comprehensive survey of Witchcraft down the years, with the emphasis very much on the way the subject has impacted the public imagination via storytelling, art and movies, to name but three areas. There will undoubtedly be more thorough and/or academic studies out there, but few will address the subject as entertainingly. Perhaps what really singles this book out, though, is that the excellent text is bolstered by Taschen’s famed quality vis-a-vis the illustrations - that alone would justify the ( not unreasonable ) price.
