The only weatherproof camera on the market.
33 of 36 found this helpful I have tried a number of DSLR cameras including the Nikon D70 and the Canon digital rebel. In the end, I ended up with the Olympus.
Why Olympus and why the E-1?
Olympus uses the "4/3rds" format. After looking at the other formats, I realized that there were all evolutionary in terms of design wheras Olympus is more revolutionary. The purpose of Nikon and Canon was to maintain some backward compatibility whereas Olympus totally optimzed for digital. The "4/3rds" system is the only SLR system designed from scratch for digital. This format allows for fly-by-wire control of focus and zoom. Also, it allows for reprogramming the lense through the camera.
For example, one of my lenses had a "firmware update" available to improve performance. Had this been a Nikon, Canon or something else, that lens would have to go back to the manufacturer to be reprogrammed. With Olympus, it's simply connecting the camera (with lens) to the computer and using their software to reprogram the lens or camera.
I really like the "fly-by-wire" focus of the E-1. What this means is that I can hold the camera by the focus ring when I press the shutter button to focus. The focus ring does not need to move when the camera is focusing. Then after the camera focuses, I can manually change the focus to another object if I needed to.
Unlike the E-300 and E-500, the E-1 has a focus screen that allows for manual focusing. The E-1 also has a 100% viewfinder.
Ergonomically, there is nothing from Canon or Nikon that matches the E-1. The button layout on the Olympus is wonderful and there is a button for just about every function.
The camera is also weatherproof as Olympus boasts the only weatherproof system on the market. Shoot in pooring rain. No problems.
Then there is the "dustbuster" which is the super sonic wave filter. You see, with traditional film, each frame or picture is essentially a new "sensor". Have dust? No problem because when you wind the film, you get a new photographic "sensor". With DIGITAL SLR, this is not true, so what ends up happening is that dust collects and accumulates over time. With the Olympus dustbuster, it shakes this dust off so that one does not have to worry about this problem. This is such a huge, HUGE convenience.
Whitebalance sensor. One of the problems with digital camera is getting the white balance correct. Anyone with a digital camera knows what I'm talking about. Well Olympus solves this issues by the addition of a white balance sensor for measuring the 'temperature' of ambient light. This makes WB dead on in most pictures.
Then there's Oly color. It's excellent. Not overly saturated like Nikon. Not plasticy like Canon.
Myths 1:
2 second startup time. It's a myth that this is even significant. It takes me more than 2 seconds to frame a picture, so in terms of usage, I NEVER notice the powerup delay.
Myth 2:
5 MP. I had several 8MP DSLRs and there is not a significant difference between 5MP and 8MP IMHO. In fact, for most pictures, 5MP works out better. The files are smaller, and printing out to 8x10 there is no resolution advantage with 8MP.
Weaknesses of the E-1:
My biggest beef with the camera is that after taking a picture, it takes about 2-3 seconds for the preview to show up on the rear LCD. It's annoying at times and the other Olympus DSLR cameras do this instantly now.
Overall, this camera is such a joy to use. Everytime I pick it up, it puts a smile on my face to just hold it.

Fantastic. love it
4 of 4 found this helpful I know this is not current tech, but it's still very good. I wanted wall controls and volume knobs, and I have those in my house. I stream from Airplay devices to two Apple TVs (just for audio) which essentially makes it mobile controlled as well.
So far so good.

Good C206 Xeon motherboard.
The board works well.
My only complaint is that that audio does not support AC97 standard, only HD Audio.
