Superb semi-pro camera
I was fully intending to buy a 40D as an upgrade to my trusty 350D but took the plunge and went for the 50D as it was not much more money. I have a collection of very good quality lenses and this camera really makes the most of them. The pictures are superb, especially in low-light conditions, and the ability to rattle off 6 frames per second is great for action shots.
The rear screen is a joy to behold compared to the 350D. It is large, clear and readable in all conditions. Reviewing shots is instant, no more delays like with the 350D and using the selection wheel makes it even quicker.
Another useful feature for me is an ISO readout in the viewfinder so you don't accidentally leave the ISO on the wrong setting. There is a huge range of ISO settings compared to the 350D, and a very handy AUTO ISO mode.
With about 6-8 weeks usage under my belt, I would say the positive points of this camera are (no particular order): -
1. The rear LCD screen
2. Low light response
3. Six frames per second in hi-speed shooting mode
4. Resolution of 15mp
5. Sensor cleaning
6. New sRAW formats for smaller file sizes
7. Micro-focus adjustment for individual lenses for super sharp shots.
8. Improved Canon processing software.
There are some drawbacks - not negatives as such, but they need to be taken into consideration when thinking about buying such a camera: -
1. Weight - this is much larger and heavier camera than the 350D. With the 70-200 f2.8 lens, a battery grip and a 580ex flash, it is a real neck breaker.
2. Larger file sizes means bigger Compact Flash CF memory cards. I also ended up buying the expensive UDMA 300x cards that this camera supports.
3. Larger file sizes means it takes much longer to copy the files to your PC for storage or post processing, they also take up more space.
4. I needed to buy a different remote cable as the 350D and 50D use different connectors.
Summary: -
A superb upgrade which I have not regretted for an instant. The camera feels much more professional, it is more responsive, seems to focus better and faster and I feel much more confident that it will not let me down in important situations.
